Can you pay for a hotel room at reception in Russia with a foreign card?

Not with a card from global payment methods. Cards issued outside Russia have been blocked at Russian terminals since 2022, and a hotel desk is no exception. On the spot you can pay with cash in rubles, a Russian-issued card or a Russian payment network QR code — and PayInRussia pays through the Russian payment network.

Online and at the desk are two different things

When you book online, the payment goes through the booking site, not the hotel. Some Russian sites have international versions that take foreign cards for some properties, and many offer a “pay at the hotel” option instead. Whether your card is accepted there depends on the site — check at checkout.

At reception, the terminal belongs to a Russian bank and talks only to Russian payment networks. A card from global payment methods issued abroad is declined every time, and so are Apple Pay and Google Pay. Nothing is wrong with your card — it is the network block.

What hotel reception desks accept in 2026

City hotels usually take cash and Russian-issued cards, and many also offer a Russian payment network QR code at the desk. Smaller guesthouses in the regions may take fewer of these, so ask when you confirm the booking.

  • Cash in rubles — accepted everywhere and always the fallback
  • A Russian-issued bank card at the terminal
  • A Russian payment network QR code at the desk, available at many hotels — ask for it “по QR-коду”
  • A foreign UnionPay card — sometimes, but acceptance is patchy and not something to plan around

Paying at the desk with a virtual card

PayInRussia is a virtual card you open online before the trip, and at reception it pays over the Russian payment network like any Russian banking app. Ask for the QR code, scan it in the app, check the amount and confirm. The receptionist sees the payment arrive in seconds.

On Android the card also works contactless at the terminal. On iPhone, use the QR code.

What to sort out before you check in

Carry some rubles in cash as a backup, especially outside Moscow and St Petersburg. Message the hotel before arrival and ask whether they take Russian payment network QR payments at the desk, so you know whether to bring extra cash. And remember that a deposit is a separate charge from the room, so plan for both.
