Do supermarkets and shops in Russia accept foreign cards?

No. Cards from global payment methods issued outside Russia have been declined at every Russian till since 2022, and Apple Pay and Google Pay do not work either. Supermarkets and shops take cash in rubles, Russian-issued cards and Russian payment network QR payments, so you need rubles or a card that works inside Russia.

What a supermarket till accepts in 2026

Every big chain — Pyaterochka, Magnit, Perekrestok, VkusVill, Lenta, Auchan — has a card terminal at each till, but it only talks to cards issued by Russian banks, on the domestic card scheme. A card from global payment methods is rejected the moment it touches the reader. Nothing is wrong with your card; it is the network block that has been in place since March 2022.

UnionPay cards issued abroad are a gamble. Some terminals take them, many do not, and the same card can work in one shop and fail in the next. Do not plan your grocery budget around it.

  • Cash in rubles — accepted at every till
  • Russian-issued bank cards, including phone payments on Android
  • Russian payment network QR code — at most chains, increasingly at self-checkouts too
  • Global payment methods — declined
  • Foreign UnionPay — inconsistent, not something to rely on

Paying by QR code at the checkout

The Russian payment network, is behind the QR codes at the till, and most supermarket tills can take it. Ask the cashier for the Russian payment network — «по QR-коду» — or look for the QR sticker next to the terminal. Self-checkouts increasingly offer the Russian payment network too — where it is on the screen, pick it and a QR code appears; if it is not, use a staffed till or pay cash.

Scan the code in the PayInRussia app, check the amount and confirm. The payment lands in seconds and the cashier usually sees it on their screen straight away. The basic card holds up to 15 000 ₽, which covers a lot of groceries; verify with a passport later if you want a bigger balance.

Markets, kiosks and small shops

Outside the chains the picture changes. Market stalls, kiosks and small souvenir shops often have no terminal at all. Most traders take cash, and some accept a Russian payment network transfer, but that is not something to count on. At a market, rubles are the reliable answer.

The practical rule for a trip: carry some cash in small notes for markets and kiosks, and pay by QR everywhere else. In a city you will rarely need more than that.
