Can you pay for a taxi in Russia with cash?
Yes. Taxi drivers everywhere in Russia accept cash in rubles. In Yandex Go (Яндекс Go), the main taxi app, choose Cash as the payment method before you order and hand the driver the fare at the end of the ride. It is the usual fallback when the app rejects a foreign card.

How to choose cash in Yandex Go
Yandex Go works with a foreign phone number, so you can order a car without a Russian SIM. The payment method sits under the price on the order screen. Set it to cash before you confirm, so the driver knows what to expect.
- Enter your destination and check the price
- Tap the payment method under the price
- Choose Cash (Наличные)
- Confirm the order and wait for the car
- Pay the driver the amount shown in the app
What to have ready before the ride ends
Bring rubles. Dollars, euros and yuan are not a way to pay for a taxi — do not expect a driver to take them, and exchange money before you ride.
Carry small notes. A 5 000 ₽ note for a 600 ₽ ride is a problem, because drivers often do not have that much change. Notes of 100, 200 and 500 ₽ are the ones you want.
The price in the app is usually fixed when you book, so there is no meter to watch and nothing to negotiate. Tipping is not expected; rounding up is enough.
Cash works, but it is not the only option
Cash means carrying rubles and finding change after every ride. As of 2026, global payment methods are rejected in Yandex Go, and Apple Pay and Google Pay do not work in Russia, which is why many visitors end up paying cash by default.
PayInRussia’s card details can be added in Yandex Go as the payment card. It behaves like a Russian-issued card there, and the fare is charged in the app when the ride ends, with no change to count.
Some drivers also accept a Russian payment network transfer or carry a card terminal, but do not count on it. Hailing a car on the street is not recommended either — order in the app and pick the payment method you want there.
