How do foreigners buy museum, theatre and tour tickets in Russia?
Online, most Russian museums, theatres and tour sites take Russian-issued cards or the Russian payment network and a card from global payment methods is usually declined. At the ticket desk you can pay cash. To book from abroad, you need a card that works in Russia — PayInRussia covers both the Russian payment network and card-number checkouts.

Where tickets are sold and what they accept
The big venues sell directly: the Hermitage (hermitagemuseum.org), the Tretyakov Gallery (tretyakovgallery.ru), the Bolshoi (bolshoi.ru), the Moscow Kremlin museums and Peterhof. Resellers such as Yandex Afisha (Яндекс Афиша) and Kassir.ru cover theatres, concerts and smaller museums.
All of these checkouts offer Russian bank cards, and most also list the Russian payment network. A card from global payment methods issued abroad has been blocked in Russia since March 2022, so these checkouts almost always decline it, and Apple Pay and Google Pay do not work either. Nothing is wrong with your card — it is the network block.
Three ways to pay that work
Any of the following works; pick the one that fits where you are buying.
- The Russian payment network at online checkout: choose it, pick Pay in Russia in the bank list and confirm in the app with one tap
- Card details: where a site asks for a card number, enter the number, expiry and CVV from the app — it behaves like a Russian-issued card
- Cash at the ticket desk (касса) of the museum or theatre
Book ahead or buy at the door
For most museums, walking up and paying cash at the desk is fine. The exceptions are the places everyone wants: the Hermitage and Peterhof in summer, the Kremlin Armoury with its timed sessions, and the Bolshoi, where seats go weeks ahead. Buy those online as soon as your dates are fixed.
Some theatres, the Bolshoi among them, sell named tickets and may ask for ID at the entrance, so book under the name in the passport you will carry. Most museums do not — a QR code on your phone is usually enough.
Tours and private guides
Tripster and Sputnik8 list walking tours, day trips and private guides across Russia. Many listings take a small prepayment online, by Russian card or the Russian payment network and the rest in person — guides commonly accept a Russian payment network transfer by phone number or cash. Check the listing at checkout for how the balance is paid.
